Dance Biography

Audrey Donaldson, Ed.D/CI, is an educator who shares the joy of dance with students of all ages.  June Donaldson has been teaching Philly bop and cha-cha since 2003. Together they have taught at dance conventions, community events, fundraisers in schools and churches, and privately in Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, Michigan, Ohio, & Virginia.

Both Audrey and June enjoy the challenges of teaching and agree that dance is a process that requires a range of instructional techniques for a variety of learning styles. They are committed to make a yearlong contribution to Philadelphians of all ages seeking to enhance their emotional, social, and health status.

“Philly Bop” is the foundation of Audrey and June’s instruction.  Well known for their promotion of the “Philly Bop” and Cha-Cha, this couple shares their passion for these traditional dances to “Oldies” and Jazz music.

As dance enthusiasts, Audrey and June, native Philadelphians, have contributed 15 unique line dances to the global dance community. The influence of the “Philly Bop” and Cha-cha, is a feature of each of their line dances.  Most popular are Soul Steppin, Happy Kwanzaa, Lil Red Boat, and Some Bridges.  Throughout the year their dance instruction includes free classes for community events and fundraisers.  Instruction incorporates popular dances, old and new, including those which are easy and ‘arthritis-friendly’ dances.  The format aims to engage participants in an enjoyable learning experience.

Dance Instruction

Dance promotes self-esteem, teaches social graces, and provides emotional, physical, and social support to dancers of all ages. Free (and low-cost) instruction is offered to dancers of all ages. Instruction to couples includes ‘Just for men’ classes and “Couples only” to strengthen relationships by engaging couples in shared activities. In addition, the joy of line dance has been shared through free instruction with others at Love Park, the Martin Luther King Senior Center, and the Friends Neighborhood Guild.

On a monthly basis the “Philly Bop” is shared with dancers, primarily senior citizens, during line dance fundraisers to promote health and social opportunity.  Although the event is held to raise funds for the youth, intergenerational understanding is fostered as the youth share their service learning experiences and demonstrate their appreciation for the financial support.  Additionally, the youth are exposed to the cultural traditions and social interactions as a result of the event, the line dancing, Philly Bop, positive exchanges, and friendly atmosphere.

Preservation of Dance

Audrey and June promote the “Philly Bop” as the Official Dance of Philadelphia.  In June of 2006, they shared the “Philly Bop” at the Odunde Festival.   Through regular dance instruction, travel to dance conferences in other states, and globally via Youtube andoldiesinphilly.com, Audrey and June have shared the “Philly Bop” worldwide.  Instruction serves to promote the traditional form of the dance, as well as to incorporate new steps and to encourage learners to create and explore flexible options while enjoying and sharing new expressions of the Philly Bop.

Philadelphia: The City of Brotherly Love (& Dance)

As a result of the Youtube videos, website:www.dancinginphilly.com, and bi-weekly distribution to announce local events via email: dance@dancinginphilly.comthousands of dancers remain abreast of the dance opportunities in the Philadelphia region.  Through sharing both the steps, instructions, and local dance events, dancers have traveled from other states to meet and join the Philadelphia “Oldies” dance community to learn and to practice with dance enthusiasts and instructors June and Audrey.

These local and inter-state connections and collaborations have served to build and to strengthen the relationships as dancers enjoin to celebrate the gift of dance.  This includes planned vacations to the region to enjoy the wealth of treasures offered in addition to an appreciation for the Philly Bop and local dance venues.

Audrey and June Donaldson have provided dance instruction, fundraisers, and promotion of dance events and African American businesses centered in the Philadelphia region.  Their sincere passion for dance choreography and instruction has served as an impetus to promote free and low cost services to senior citizens, couples, organizations, and the general public.

Hi Audrey/June. Sometimes I want to take your quotes, blow them up in big bold print, frame them with flashing lights and sit them in front of several coworker's face. Still they wouldn't get most of them. So many of them need to apply the quotes to their life. They make you think, reflect, revise and revive. You feel rejuvenated in the end when it all works out. I enjoy reading them. Thanks for sharing :)
Paula

"You're site has truly been a wealth of information that helps and keeps down confusion of what's when and where and who's hosting."

Audrey & June,I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate being on your email list of events for line dancing. I'm way down here in SW Virginia where line dancing classes are not very popular so when I open up your web pages and read all the activity it keeps me uplifted and hopeful. I'm going into my 2nd year of teaching beginner line dances with the City of Roanoke Parks and Rec. I just want to give a big thank you to all of you Philly andEast Coast line dance instructors.
